Rambler's Top100

Life in the W.E.L.L. world owns its emergence to the resurrect springs - water reservoirs formed where life-giving water broke out of the depth of the planet. No one can say for sure when the first living beings appeared on this mysterious planet or who they were, but there is no doubt their appearance was directly connected with the springs of life. The world around was unexplored and full of danger; after being killed every creature resurrected in the spring next to the place of its death.

It is no wonder life concentrated around these life-water reservoirs. Wild animals gathered around them, first sapient creatures chose territories around them for settlements.
Progenitors of sapient beings had to fight all possible kinds of living creatures for larger springs, which were necessary to secure them a safe space for living. However strong the wild nature was it couldn't resist armed fighters for ever. After a while it had to draw back to smaller springs, far away from the young civilization.
Life of the first tribes became settled and regular, population grew constantly, and after some time territories around springs got overcrowded. Some of the settlers set off then to search for other springs of life-giving water and for a better life. Towns and villages of different nations expended all over the planet. Great cities were built around the largest springs that were to become capitals of the future states. So ranges of different animals were shared out in the W.E.L.L. world.
By and by almost all springs that were suited for resurrection of the seven races of the W.E.L.L world were "cultivated"- built-over with wells. Other living creatures had to be satisfied with small rills or underground springs. Still large springs remained relatively free and open, even wild animal could resurrect there from time to time.
Due to the efforts of Prophets and Gods' followers the process of resurrection became more and more sophisticated and was accompanied by numerous ceremonies and rituals. This practice spread widely and facilitated the development of religious cults. During the Great war the necessity arouse to control the resurrection of enemy soldiers. For this reason each state made an independent decision to cover all resurrection springs with stone and pipe the life-giving water through a special canal system. The springs were guarded day and night.
That was how the Churches got the springs of resurrection under control without causing much fuss. The development of science and comprehensive studies of resurrection laws enabled the Churches to influence some processes of resurrecting. Now the clergy could effect the regaining of property by the fallen as well as control the flows of the resurrected.
Rumours were heard, that resurrection of some compromised persons was sometimes obstructed. Some citizens disappeared indeed, but after a while they could turn up again all of sudden, without having any idea where they had been. Souls of the dead found the way back to the living, just as the animal had found a way to survive after they had been forced away from the springs. Taking the resurrection of sapient beings under total control had many negative consequences, and was made top secret for this reason.

Resurrection

There are three ways a character may resurrect after a violent death:

I. Through Resurrect wells. This is a natural process, the player resurrects when his power to stay in the ghost world fades away. There are a lot of ways to speed up resurrection, if the player thinks the natural course takes too long.
The following happens during such resurrection: the portal moves closer to the ghost and then the world of the dead gets overlaid with the world of the living. The character, alive and naked, finds himself rising from the water in a ritual tub of the resurrect well.
Every well is devoted to one of the eight Gods of the W.E.L.L. world, otherwise it is regarded as wild. The loyalty to one particular God determines the distance from the well, where a character can die and resurrect in this very well. At least one well, actually the next to the place of death can always be used for resurrection. Depending of the extent of the character's devotion to the patron-God of the well he resurrects in, he may or may not count on help and support of the well servants, who can relieve negative effects and help him to a soon recover .

II. At the place of death by putting spells on the body of the character.

III. By putting spells on the ghost of the character. The resurrection will take place where the ghost is located at the moment.

After the resurrection health points and stamina parameters don't recover completely. Besides the character is afflicted with post-mortal shivering that causes reduction of skills and other parameters. Specific buffs received by the player in the Ghost world can also affect his condition after the resurrection.

Resurrection and regaining of property

Historical excursus
The unusual structure of the planet and the qualities it ownes to its creation has always caused admiration of wizards and poets of the W.E.L.L. world. For ages resurrection of the dead through the wells has been an essential part of the course of nature in the W.E.L.L. world.
The extensive studies of this phenomenon, carried out in the years of the Great War, revealed that underground streams of life-giving water were full of incorporeal inhabitants. Professor of the MagicalUniversity Klay Sidwell, who first discovered these creatures, called them the guides. Sidwell found out, that the existence of the guides is closely interlaced with that of the inhabitants on the planet's surface. The outburst of energy that accompanies the death of a living being attracts dwellers of the underground waters, who guide souls to the next well of resurrection.
Further studies of guides' nature opened new possibilities. The citizens of the seven states were enabled to resurrect with almost all their possessions. This discovery caused a great stir. With time guides became indispensable assistants of the churches that managed to "tame" them. Attendants of the wells taught them to pick valuable things of deceased. Even if something small was left at the place of death, the owner could reckon that sooner or later it would find its way back to him.
Lost and found is a system within the game, that allows a player to return objects lost during the game. The return of property is possible only in special cases and by observance of the following procedure:

1. If the property of a perished character falls into the loot, these objects go to a personal box at the Lost and Found, after the body of the dead has disappeared.
2. Stolen property goes automatically to the Lost and Found, if confiscated by the police.
3. If an object was stolen and the thief killed afterwards, such object goes to the Lost and Found, but to the personal box of the true owner.
4. If a stolen object was thrown on the ground, it will go to the Lost and Found and will be preserved there under the owner's name.

A player may collect his lost possessions in any police station by contacting a special NPC clerk.
The capaciousness of every box at the Lost and Found is limited as well as the storage term for delivered objects. The player is obliged to collect all his possessions that are deposited in the box within three game hours after having opened the box. The objects that stay in the box after the term has expired are deleted from the system.
The system includes means to inform the player, if any of his property is deposited at the Lost and Found and of the storage deadline.

The loot system

After the death of a character another player may remove some objects from the body. The corpse disappears after a while and is replaces with a special "loot-container". This container and its contents belong to the perished. The amount of the objects, that fall into the container depends on the place, the character died at, the amount of the objects and inventory containers he or she had immediately before death. Every object has its rate of "falling probability". If another character takes things of the perished, this act is regarded as looting. In the criminal codex looting is ranged with stealing and in every case a criminal proceeding is opened. The player, who is going to take an object, belonging to another player, is warned with a message, appearing on his screen, which says he is going to commit a theft. The object, abstracted from a dead body is marked with a sign "stolen". If the parameters of a group or a clan admit the possibility, that possessions of a perished may be taken by a member of his group or clan, then such members may remove possessions from the loot-container of their dead comrade without committing a crime.
Theloot from killing a NPC falls according to special rules, that differ from the rules of players-loots. Looting of some NPCs is also regarded as a crime and involves a start of a legal proceeding. The loot from a killed monster belongs for some period to the player, who caused the monster the most damage. Any other player is able to take the object from another's container, which means committing a crime.
A loot is distributed in a group according to the rules the leader of the group determines. There are following principles of distribution:

1. The loot goes to the player, who has caused the killed monster the most damage.
2. The loot goes to the player, who has first picked it up.
3. The loot goes to the player, who has drawn it by lot.
4. The loot goes to the leader of the group.

The money the group collects from looting monsters is distributed in equal parts in the group. (As far it is ordered by the leader of the group).
There are some additional rules of loot distribution, but they are not revealed here in order to protect the interests of the game developers.
